HDMI ARC

Post by icevault »

We have been using NEC E553 displays for our digital menu boards. In the past 14 months, we have had three displays fail. This is a very high failure rate considering we have consumer grade HDTVs throughout our facility that are older and still functioning even with approximately the same usage.

We are looking at alternatives to commercial displays due to the higher costs and limited benefits. While I appreciate that commercial displays have a longer warranty are supposed to be designed for heavy duty use, our real world case doesn't appear to support this theory. The one thing we don't see on consumer displays is the RS-232 port for control. They are more likely to have network access (via wi-fi or ethernet).

We have been exploring consumer displays as a replacement and many newer displays offer HDMI inputs labeled ARC (Audio Return Channel). Based on personal experience, devices connected to this HDMI port that are also ARC compliant work very well.

Do they SF-200 players support ARC so that a display connected to the SF-200 would turn on when/if they player sends the appropriate signal?

This would effectively solve our issue of controlling the display as it would automatically turn on and activate the correct HDMI port.
